Ultimate Meditation - Alex Archer

Ultimate Meditation – Alex Archer
To title a CD ‘Ultimate Meditation’ is pretty dumb in my opinion, given the highly subjective nature of meditation (let alone music!). However, Alex Archer does seem to be on to something here...

Wheel of Sound - yoga music compilation

Wheels of Sound – yoga music compilation (Maya Records)
I've not experienced first-hand the goings-on of the modern yoga movement, so am intrigued about the purpose of the current 'yoga music' phenomena, and hence took a look at this compilation CD from Maya Records that gathers together 'yoga friends' from around the globe....

Beyond Black & White – Thomas Barth (Diversity Recordings)

If you love real piano you’ll probably love this! Wistful, warm, melancholic and, err, comfy! – Barth’s range of emotions is a joy to behold...

Elemental Journey – Matt Coldrick & Matt Hillier

By the Dawn’s Early Light – Harold Budd

A double review...
Elemental Journey
– Matt Coldrick & Matt Hillier
(Absolute Ambient)
For a ‘new’ ambient CD, EJ is simply bursting with life and great ideas – I find there’s a lovely, flowing, more organic feel to this work.

By the Dawn’s Early Light – Harold Budd
(Hannibal/All Saints Records)
This classic ambient re-release from 1991 uses Bill Nelson’s drifting guitars to create gravity in its vast, sparse atmospheres. Magic from a true master.

River of Life – Chris Conway (Paradise Music)

River of Life – Chris Conway (Paradise Music)
There’s a beautiful balance and many sophisticated elements to this album, which often lifts it out of the confines of the new age genre...

Sacred Elements-Sacred Sound – Keith Duke (Fish Recordings)

Sacred Elements-Sacred Sound – Keith Duke (Fish Recordings)
Keith Duke’s soundscapes present a collage of Tibetan singing bowls, other sacred instruments and natural sounds, and seem quietly insistent that the listener becomes gentled into a state of sensitive awareness.

The Journey – Freud (Tantajo Records) The Journey – Freud (Tantajo Records)
Big in continental Europe, will Freud’s brand of positive euro-pop work here in the UK? If you just can’t get enough fresh, new Enya and Enigma then this may be for you!

Sacred River –  Gandalf (Real Music)

Sacred River –  Gandalf (Real Music)
Don’t be put off by the name, Gandalf is an established and sincere musical mage at the more sensitive and subtle end of the New Age music spectrum.

Joy of Life – Karunesh (Real Music)
I find Karunesh’s new age makeovers of the subtle, sensuous and sophisticated soundscape of the Indian sub-continent are of a better quality than most...

10 Questions for the Dalai Lama – Peter Kater (SilverWave)

10 Questions for the Dalai Lama Peter Kater (SilverWave)
This is the soundtrack CD to a new movie about the Dalai Lama. The Q&A session is not included but the music is presciently moving nonetheless.

inSPAration – various artists

inSPAration – various artists (Real Music)
A worthy compilation from new age notables such as Gandalf, 2002 and Bernward Koch. Apparently we are to call this sort of thing ‘spa music’ from now on…

S T A R – Yaatri (BrainHeart Music)

S T A R – Yaatri (BrainHeart Music)
Putting aside the claims of healing powers and divine origins (can one ever really know the truth of another’s story?), I find this track really does have something magical to offer.

Other releases - in brief

Lotus Land - Gandalf (Real Music) I still struggle with his name but can certainly recommend his music as reliably a cut above the majority of new age music. This new release will be welcome news to many of you I'm sure. (See review of previous Gandalf CD Sacred River - here
Unconditional Love - Kavi This CD is intended to open the heart, and there's no doubt that Osho's people usually have a knack of doing this when playing music, but with this CD I don't feel the desired effect made it beyond those working in the studio at the time. I can't really hear much of the English psychedelia of early Floyd that Kavi claims either - this modern ambient synthesism sounds sterile and rather complacent compared to the magical warts 'n' all naivety and passion of those halcyon days. As if Prozac is Kavi's drug of choice these days rather than LSD?
Tropical Meditation - Mark Ciaburri There's a calm confidence and assuredness that imbues this subtle and imaginative work - plus Mark's ideas are a little braver than many of his stable-mates at Real Music. Using synths, piano, guitar, cello and traditional flutes, plus many evocative sounds from India, Mark allows time a plenty for his tapestries to unfold, thereby making them ideal backdrops for meditation or healing sessions. Recommended.
La Tienda - silky smooth 'Mediterranean ambience' from Alberto Hauss of Café Del Mar fame. (Tantajo Records - www.tantajorecords.com)

Invisible Journeys - Tim Wheater, Natalie Shaw & David Lord A new quality product(!) from genre legends. I'm less familiar with Natalie's work but a new release from Tim and David is invariably good news - Kaufman.
